Nashville Is Already Halfway to the Shield. The Other Twenty-Nine Teams Play On Wednesday Anyway
Fourteen of Major League Soccer's thirty clubs kicked off a midweek round on Wednesday night — the whole schedule bar Seattle and Sporting Kansas City, whose date got bumped to October 1 so the Seahawks could have Lumen Field to themselves. Everyone else played, and for most of them it mattered: eleven games out of fourteen involve at least one side within shouting distance of a playoff line that only has room for nine per conference. Nashville, mind you, does not have that problem. More on that shortly.

The League Picture
Nashville SC sit on 53 points from 23 games — eleven clear of the pack in the East and ten clear of anyone in the entire league, a lead so comfortable that the Supporters' Shield conversation has quietly turned into a "when," not an "if." Their underlying numbers back the position up: a league-best +30 goal difference built on conceding just 17 times all season, and an 11-0-1 home record that borders on unfair. Inter Miami sit second in the East on 43 despite a season of stop-start form around Lionel Messi's workload, while Chicago Fire's pairing of Hugo Cuypers and a returning Robert Lewandowski has quietly pushed them to third.
Out West, the picture flipped over the weekend: Vancouver Whitecaps' 43 points edged them above Houston Dynamo (40) for top spot on goal difference, even after the Whitecaps themselves lost 3-1 at home to St. Louis City on Saturday. Behind that pair, LAFC, FC Dallas and St. Louis are all locked together on 37, which is about as bunched as a conference table gets this late in a season.
Both playoff lines are brutally tight. In the East, seventh-placed NYCFC (29 points) sit just two clear of tenth; in the West, seventh-placed Colorado (31) and eighth-placed Portland (31) are separated only by total wins. With the regular season running through November 7 — the last MLS campaign on the old spring-to-autumn calendar before the league shifts to a summer-spring format from 2027-28 — Wednesday's round was less a formality than a genuine shove in one direction or the other for most of the sides involved.

Atlanta United's attack is a genuine outlier at the bottom end: their 27 goals in 23 games trail everyone except Seattle (24) and the league's basement side, Sporting Kansas City (23, and a division-worst 58 conceded). Orlando's defense is nearly as leaky, having shipped 54.

Hugo Cuypers has pulled clear on his own at the top of the scoring chart with 13 goals for Chicago Fire, a tally that now includes a share of the pitch with a newly arrived Robert Lewandowski. Lionel Messi and FC Dallas's Petar Musa sit level on 12, with San Diego's Marcus Ingvartsen on 11 quietly the most under-discussed name in the top tier. A chasing pack of five — Sam Surridge (Nashville), Preston Judd (San Jose), Martín Ojeda (Orlando), Nicolás Fernández Mercau (NYCFC) and Julian Hall (Red Bulls) — sit level on nine, one good week from forcing their way into the conversation. Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-min have both cooled at LAFC as the team's form has stalled, and Vancouver's Brian White has slipped out of the top ten entirely.
Worth tracking on Wednesday specifically: Griezmann's move to Orlando has produced eight goal involvements in eight appearances, including the only goal in Saturday's win over San Diego, and he lines up away at Atlanta tonight. Messi and Lewandowski face off for the first time in MLS at Soldier Field. And Musa gets a shot at extending his tally away at Minnesota, a fixture that has produced fewer than three goals in six of the last eight meetings.

CF Montréal vs Charlotte FC

CF Montréal are bottom of the Eastern Conference and playing out a season with little left to salvage beyond pride, which makes a home date against a Charlotte side arriving in considerably better form an awkward proposition. Charlotte sit fifth in the East on 36 points and have carried noticeably more threat in recent weeks than the hosts, though their away record this season has been unconvincing enough that a routine win shouldn't be assumed. Expect Charlotte to control the game territorially; whether they finish enough of their chances to beat a Montréal side with nothing to lose is the real question.

Atlanta United vs Orlando City

Atlanta scrapped a 2-2 draw out of a star-studded Inter Miami side on Saturday, debutant Breel Embolo levelling from the penalty spot in the 87th minute — a rare bright spot in a season where the hosts have scored fewer goals (27) than every MLS team bar Seattle and Sporting KC. Orlando arrive with the division's second-worst defensive record (54 conceded) but a much-improved attack since Antoine Griezmann's arrival; he's contributed to eight goals in eight games, including Saturday's winner against San Diego. The two sides have split their two meetings this season, with five goals shared between them — this fixture, on recent evidence, tends to go either way. Orlando's away form (two wins in eleven on the road) is the bigger concern for the visitors, and a home crowd desperate for a positive result gives Atlanta a puncher's chance despite their own frailties up front.

Nothing about the current form line suggests that trend is about to reverse.

Toronto FC vs Nashville SC

The Supporters' Shield is all but decided, but Nashville still have reasons to turn up: a ten-point cushion at the top doesn't defend itself, and Robin Fraser's side have lost only one of their last eight MLS away matches. Toronto, for their part, have been unexpectedly resilient of late — American international Josh Sargent scored a hat-trick in a wild 4-4 draw with Chicago last time out, part of a run of six games unbeaten (two wins, four draws) that follows twelve without a win across all competitions before that. History still favors the visitors heavily: Nashville have won six of the last twelve meetings, Toronto three, with three draws, and Toronto have failed to win ten of their last eleven home games in all competitions. The league leaders travel as clear favorites, but Toronto's home form has been stubborn enough to make backing a routine Nashville win uncomfortable.

The head-to-head record over 22 meetings tilts Philadelphia's way (ten wins to eight, with four draws), and their specific record against Cincinnati at home is even more one-sided — five wins and two draws from their last seven, unbeaten since May 2019. Everything here points one direction.

New York City FC vs New England Revolution

These two met three weeks ago and drew 1-1; NYCFC's form has only worsened since, extending to seven games without a win (three draws, four losses) including a goalless stalemate with Nashville last Saturday and back-to-back Leagues Cup exits in August. NYCFC's saving grace is a genuinely strong home record against this specific opponent — unbeaten in six at home versus New England since 2021, five wins and a draw — which is the only real argument for a home side that otherwise looks short of confidence.

Real Salt Lake's slide has been steeper still: they haven't won since restarting after the World Cup break, eight matches without a victory. Squad news doesn't help the visitors — Lyle Foster is out injured, Agustín Resch and Felipe Andrade are both suspended — though Morgan Guilavogui returns from his own ban and DeAndre Yedlin should be back at right-back. Even a Houston side low on confidence should have enough against opponents in worse shape.

Chicago, third in the East, have the league's outright top scorer in Hugo Cuypers and the platform to make this an awkward night for a Miami defense that has looked breachable all year. Colorado have won this exact fixture on their last visit and could make it back-to-back for the first time since 2023-24, but their away form this season simply doesn't support that history repeating. Colorado's Zack Steffen, Mamadou Billo Diop and Theodore Ku-DiPietro are all unavailable through injury.

The Red Bulls have lost five of their last eight, though they did manage their first clean sheet since March in a scoreless draw at Seattle — their fifth straight game without a win. Three of the four all-time meetings between these sides have gone over 2.5 goals, and the current market has New York's defensive record priced in: NYRB are available at +1.25 on the Asian Handicap at around -105, a line that reflects their 46 goals conceded — 22 more than LAFC — more than it reflects any real away-team optimism.
