Ligue 1 Matchweek 5 Betting Preview: France’s Early Hierarchy Faces Its First Proper Examination

The Betting Edge · Ligue 1 · Matchweek 5 · Friday–Sunday, 18–20 September 2026 · By Obilly the Greatman

Four rounds into the new Ligue 1 season, the table has already begun offering opinions. Some are persuasive. Others are the statistical equivalent of a gentleman loudly reviewing a restaurant before the starters have arrived.

Lille, Monaco and Rennes have opened the campaign unbeaten and sit together on ten points. Lyon and Paris FC are close behind, also unbeaten, while Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille have made unexpectedly slow starts. Nice have scored once in four matches, Auxerre have conceded eleven times, and Strasbourg have apparently decided defending is an optional administrative exercise.

It is far too early to declare permanent winners and losers. Four matches are enough to identify patterns, but not enough to decide whether those patterns represent genuine quality, fixture effects or a brief period in which every rebound happens to land kindly.

Nevertheless, Matchweek 5 should tell us considerably more. Lyon host Rennes in a meeting of unbeaten contenders. Lille take their impressive defensive record to struggling Nice. Paris FC’s surprisingly convincing start will be tested by the league’s most prolific attack, and Marseille welcome PSG for a Le Classique that feels unusually important for two clubs still searching for their expected rhythm.

Here is the complete match-by-match preview, with tactical analysis, team-news considerations, player trends, score predictions and a cautious interpretation of the early betting markets.

A Three-Team Lead, an Unbeaten Chasing Group and Two Giants Looking Upward

Lille lead Ligue 1 after four matches, although only goal difference separates them from Monaco and Rennes. All three clubs have collected ten points from a possible twelve.

Lille’s goal difference of +5 gives them first place, with Monaco on +4 and Rennes on +3. Lyon and Paris FC have eight points apiece, while Strasbourg occupy sixth on seven. Brest, PSG and Lorient follow with five points each.

The opening weeks have therefore created a compact leading group rather than a solitary runaway leader. Five of the top six remain unbeaten, and only three points separate first from sixth.

Ligue 1 table after Matchweek 4 (top six)
Pos Team P Record GD Pts
1Lille43-1-0+510
2Monaco43-1-0+410
3Rennes43-1-0+310
4Lyon42-2-0+48
5Paris FC42-2-0+48
6Strasbourg42-1-1+17

Lille’s position rests upon balance. Their attacking production has been solid rather than extravagant, but the concession of only two goals suggests a structure capable of surviving less impressive performances. Monaco and Rennes have also combined attacking competence with defensive control, although Rennes’ eight goals make them the most productive of the leading three.

Lyon have followed closely behind with six goals scored and only two conceded. Their football has not always been spectacular, but controlled competence is hardly a defect. It is simply more difficult to package into an inspirational montage.

Paris FC may be the most notable early overperformer. They remain unbeaten, have conceded only twice and have already shown that they can compete away from home. Their victory at Marseille was particularly significant because it demonstrated a willingness to attack established opposition rather than merely survive it.

Strasbourg, meanwhile, have taken a more recreational attitude toward risk. Their nine goals are the highest total in the division, but eight conceded means their matches have produced 17 goals across four rounds. They can create chances quickly, transition with pace and overwhelm opponents, but their defensive exposure remains substantial.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Nice have scored only one goal. Auxerre possess the division’s weakest defensive figures, with eleven conceded and a -6 goal difference. Marseille sit in the lower half after three defeats, while PSG needed a narrow victory over Brest to record their first league win of the campaign.

These are not yet crises. They are, however, unusually well-dressed inconveniences.

What the Numbers Are Beginning to Say

The statistical picture remains vulnerable to small-sample distortion. One heavy defeat can transform a club’s defensive average, while a single productive afternoon can make an otherwise ordinary attack appear irresistible.

Troyes provide the obvious example. Their 6-2 defeat against Strasbourg has significantly damaged their overall goal difference. Marseille’s four-goal performance against Strasbourg has had the opposite effect, giving them a respectable attacking total despite losing three of four matches.

Small samples can flatter or flatten a season’s early goal difference — context matters more than the raw number.

Even with that caution, several trends are worth monitoring:

  • Strasbourg have the most productive attack, scoring nine times.
  • Rennes have scored eight, the best attacking return among the leading trio.
  • Lille, Monaco, Lyon and Paris FC have each conceded only twice.
  • Nice have scored once, the weakest attacking return.
  • Auxerre have conceded eleven, comfortably the poorest defensive figure.
  • Le Mans matches have produced 15 combined goals, making them an early favourite for entertainment, if not necessarily for defensive coaching awards.
  • Matchweek 4 was considerably tighter, featuring three 1-0 matches and two goalless draws.

The latest round may indicate that teams are beginning to settle tactically. Defensive spacing tends to improve once new signings understand their roles and coaches have completed the annual process of discovering that their preferred pre-season formation does not quite work.

That does not mean Ligue 1 has suddenly become a low-scoring competition. Rather, the contrast between the opening rounds and Matchweek 4 suggests that goal markets should be evaluated fixture by fixture instead of through a single league-wide assumption.

The Golden Boot Race: Gouiri, Doumbia and Sinayoko Set the Pace

Three players enter Matchweek 5 level at the top of the scoring chart.

Three players share the early Golden Boot lead heading into Matchweek 5.

Amine Gouiri has scored four of Marseille’s six goals. His individual form has therefore remained excellent despite his club’s poor results. He has been Marseille’s most reliable finisher and their clearest route into matches, although the concentration of goals around one player also makes them easier to plan against.

Kamory Doumbia has four goals and an assist for Brest, giving him five direct contributions. His output has been particularly impressive because it has come from midfield or advanced midfield areas rather than a conventional penalty-box role.

Lassine Sinayoko has also scored four, supplying much of Paris FC’s cutting edge during their unbeaten start. His ability to threaten space in transition should be central to Saturday’s meeting with Strasbourg, whose attacking ambition can leave room behind the first pressing line.

The closest challengers have three goals each:

  • Esteban Lepaul of Rennes
  • Ferran Torres of PSG
  • Florian Thauvin of Lens
  • Louis Mafouta of Le Mans
  • Paris Brunner of Monaco

Doumbia is arguably the standout player of the opening month because he has combined finishing with creative contribution. Sinayoko’s importance to Paris FC is similarly obvious, while Gouiri remains difficult to ignore despite Marseille’s position.

Among the principal creators, available providers differ slightly in how assists are allocated. Cristian Cásseres Jr. and Panos Katseris have been credited with three assists by one source, while other current leaders include Thauvin, Adil Bourabaa, Olivier Giroud and Adrien Thomasson on two.

This discrepancy is not unusual. Different providers apply different definitions to rebounds, deflections and secondary actions. Football statistics are very precise until two companies are asked what an assist is.

Friday 18 September

Monaco vs Lens

🟡 Value
Kick-off: 19:45 BST / 20:45 CEST Venue: Stade Louis II
Monaco 2.25 Draw 3.70 Lens 2.88

Prediction: Monaco 2-1 Lens

Monaco enter the weekend with ten points, an unbeaten record and only two goals conceded. Lens have collected four points and arrive after a 2-2 draw at Le Mans, a result that highlighted both their attacking resources and their defensive vulnerability.

The home side should attempt to control territory, build patiently and pin Lens’ wide players into a deeper shape. Monaco’s main objective will be to prevent Lens from escaping the first press because Florian Thauvin remains dangerous when receiving between the lines or moving into the space behind an advanced midfield.

Paris Brunner has been one of Monaco’s most influential early performers. The 20-year-old has scored three times and brings directness around the penalty area. His movement against the Lens centre-backs could determine whether Monaco convert possession into clear chances rather than merely attractive circulation.

Lens are unlikely to dominate the ball, but they possess enough transition quality to make Monaco uncomfortable. Their route into the contest may involve allowing Monaco’s full-backs to advance before attacking the vacated channels quickly.

The early availability list placed Christian Mawissa among Monaco’s possible suspensions. Lens had Sagnan and K. Antonio listed as suspended, while Nawrocki was carrying an injury designation. These statuses should be checked after the final press conferences because the source information preceded the latest round of matches.

At 2.25, Monaco are only modest favourites. That price reflects the attacking threat Lens still carry, even though their results have been inconsistent. A Monaco victory is the likeliest outcome, but the home defence may not emerge untouched.

Best analytical angle: Monaco to win in a match where both sides create chances. Correct-score lean: 2-1.

Saturday 19 September

Paris FC vs Strasbourg

⚪ Goals/BTTS
Kick-off: 16:15 BST / 17:15 CEST Venue: Stade Jean-Bouin
Paris FC 1.95 Draw 3.70 Strasbourg 3.60

Prediction: Paris FC 2-1 Strasbourg

Paris FC have been one of the season’s most convincing early surprises. They are unbeaten, possess a +4 goal difference and have conceded only two goals. Their performances have been disciplined without becoming passive, and they have shown an ability to punish opponents in transition.

Strasbourg are almost the inverse. They lead the league with nine goals but have conceded eight. Their matches have been open, energetic and occasionally allergic to midfield control.

This creates a fascinating stylistic clash. Paris FC should be comfortable allowing Strasbourg possession in less threatening areas before breaking through Sinayoko. Strasbourg’s forward commitment can produce overloads, but it can also leave their central defenders exposed if the first counter-press is beaten.

Sinayoko is the obvious player to watch after scoring four times in four matches. His combination of power and straight-line running could be especially effective against a back line that has struggled when isolated. Strasbourg’s own threat is distributed more widely, with Gessime Yassine and Sam Amo-Ameyaw among their early scorers.

El Mourabet appeared on Strasbourg’s suspension list, while Paris FC defender Otavio was carrying an injury designation. Both situations require final confirmation.

The home price of 1.95 looks relatively short for a club whose long-term level is still being established. Paris FC deserve favouritism on current form, but Strasbourg’s attacking output makes this difficult to treat as a routine home win.

Best analytical angle: Both teams to score. Correct-score lean: 2-1.

Lyon vs Rennes

🟡 Value
Kick-off: 19:45 BST / 20:45 CEST Venue: Groupama Stadium
Embed from Getty Images
Two unbeaten sides meet in the weekend’s clearest litmus test.
Lyon 2.10 Draw 3.75 Rennes 3.10

Prediction: Lyon 1-1 Rennes

This is the most significant competitive fixture of Matchweek 5.

Lyon and Rennes are both unbeaten. Lyon have conceded only twice, while Rennes have taken ten points and scored eight goals. The visitors arrive with greater attacking momentum, but Lyon’s control and home advantage explain why they are listed as favourites.

The tactical contest should revolve around midfield territory. Lyon will want to establish possession, circulate through central areas and control the game through counter-pressing. Rennes may be happier if the match becomes vertical, allowing Esteban Lepaul to attack the channels and their supporting midfielders to exploit second balls.

Lepaul has scored three times and represents Rennes’ clearest penalty-area threat. Adrien Thomasson and Sebastian Szymański add creativity behind him. Lyon can respond with the speed of Malick Fofana and Loïs Openda, particularly if Rennes commit too many players to the press.

The key question is whether Lyon can play through pressure without losing the ball in dangerous central areas. If they can, Rennes’ defensive line may be forced to retreat. If they cannot, the visitors possess enough energy and movement to create chances before Lyon recover their shape.

Rennes goalkeeper Brice Samba was listed with a muscle problem, while Mahdi Camara appeared on the suspension list. Their final status could materially affect the balance of the match.

The draw price of 3.75 is notable given the respective starts. Lyon deserve narrow favouritism, but Rennes’ attacking form and unbeaten record make them difficult to oppose.

Best analytical angle: A draw or a one-goal margin either way. Correct-score lean: 1-1.

Toulouse vs Le Havre

🔵 Solid
Kick-off: 19:45 BST / 20:45 CEST Venue: Stadium de Toulouse
Toulouse 1.80 Draw 3.50 Le Havre 4.50

Prediction: Toulouse 1-0 Le Havre

Neither side has won a league match this season, but Toulouse have demonstrated considerably more attacking promise.

They have scored four goals, including two in their latest draw with Lorient, while Le Havre have scored only twice across four rounds. Le Havre’s 0-0 draw against Angers showed improved defensive stability, although it did little to answer the questions surrounding their attacking output.

Toulouse should have more possession and territorial control. Cristian Cásseres Jr. has been an important creative influence, and his passing from midfield could help move Le Havre’s compact defensive block from side to side.

The danger for Toulouse lies in their defensive transitions. They have conceded seven times and can become stretched when too many players move ahead of the ball. Le Havre may therefore accept long periods without possession and target set pieces, second balls and counterattacks.

A. Vossah appeared on Toulouse’s suspension list, while J. Mwanga was listed as suspended for Le Havre. Goalkeeper Paul Argney also carried an injury designation.

The home price of 1.80 is relatively strong considering Toulouse remain winless, but it reflects Le Havre’s limited scoring threat. This looks more likely to become a tight home victory than a comfortable one.

Best analytical angle: A low-scoring match. Correct-score lean: 1-0.

Angers vs Troyes

🟡 Value
Kick-off: 19:45 BST / 20:45 CEST Venue: Stade Raymond Kopa
Angers 2.25 Draw 3.20 Troyes 3.40

Prediction: Angers 1-1 Troyes

Angers and Troyes both enter the weekend with four points, although their routes to that total have looked rather different.

Angers have scored four and conceded five, producing relatively controlled matches. Troyes have been far more volatile, largely because of their 6-2 defeat by Strasbourg. That result may be an outlier, but it exposed significant problems with spacing and defensive recovery.

Angers should attempt to use home advantage through territorial pressure, crosses and set pieces. Troyes, understandably chastened by their earlier defensive adventure, may favour a narrower and more conservative approach.

Amine El Ouazzani’s movement should be important for Angers. If he can drag defenders away from central zones, the home side may create opportunities for runners arriving from midfield.

Troyes defender Paolo Gozzi was listed with a muscle injury and should be monitored ahead of final team selection.

Neither club has produced enough consistent evidence to justify strong confidence. Angers’ home advantage is meaningful, but Troyes should be capable of responding if they avoid allowing the match to become stretched.

Best analytical angle: The draw. Correct-score lean: 1-1.

Le Mans vs Lorient

⚪ Goals/BTTS
Kick-off: 19:45 BST / 20:45 CEST Venue: Stade Marie-Marvingt
Le Mans 2.88 Draw 3.30 Lorient 2.45

Prediction: Le Mans 2-2 Lorient

If one fixture appears structurally designed to produce goals, it is this one.

Le Mans remain winless but have drawn three of their four matches. They have scored seven times and conceded eight, meaning their games have produced an average of 3.75 goals. Lorient have five points and arrive after a 2-2 draw against Toulouse.

Le Mans possess enough attacking quality to trouble most opponents. Louis Mafouta has already scored three times, while Adil Bourabaa has contributed both goals and assists. Their problem has been controlling matches once they open up.

Lorient should look to exploit the channels whenever Le Mans commit players forward. Panos Katseris has been one of the division’s most productive creators and could find useful space against a home side that occasionally loses defensive width.

The availability list was concerning for Le Mans. Goalkeeper Kocik, Larouci and Yohou were listed with injuries, while Sidibé and Voyer appeared among the possible suspensions. Lorient’s Fadiga was also listed injured.

Lorient are understandable favourites at 2.45, but Le Mans have scored too consistently to dismiss. Their difficulty has been preserving leads and maintaining defensive structure, not creating chances.

Best analytical angle: A high-scoring match, with both teams likely to score. Correct-score lean: 2-2.

Sunday 20 September

Auxerre vs Brest

🟡 Value
Kick-off: 14:00 BST / 15:00 CEST Venue: Stade Abbé-Deschamps
Auxerre 2.75 Draw 3.40 Brest 2.45

Prediction: Auxerre 1-2 Brest

Auxerre finally collected their first victory by beating Nice 1-0, but their overall defensive record remains concerning. They have conceded eleven times and possess the league’s worst goal difference.

Brest lost 1-0 to PSG in their most recent match but have five points and a more convincing attacking structure. Kamory Doumbia’s four goals and one assist make him the central figure in this contest.

Auxerre cannot afford an open game. Their best route is likely to involve compact defensive distances, controlled possession and careful management of Brest’s transitions. Brest, by contrast, should be willing to attack the space around Auxerre’s midfield screen and use Ludovic Ajorque to occupy the central defenders.

Cameron Archer offers Auxerre a threat of their own, having scored twice. He may not receive many opportunities, so efficiency will be essential.

Makosso and Bair appeared on Auxerre’s suspension list, while Oppegård was listed with an illness. Brest’s Diambou and goalkeeper Cagnon were carrying injury designations.

Brest’s away price of 2.45 reflects Auxerre’s defensive struggles. The hosts’ victory over Nice provides encouragement, but Nice’s attacking record means it should not be taken as definitive evidence that the defensive problems have disappeared.

Best analytical angle: Brest to take something from the match. Correct-score lean: 1-2.

Nice vs Lille

🐐 Banker
Kick-off: 16:15 BST / 17:15 CEST Venue: Allianz Riviera
Nice 3.50 Draw 3.40 Lille 2.05

Prediction: Nice 0-1 Lille

This is the clearest form mismatch of the weekend.

Nice are bottom of the table, remain without a victory and have scored only once. Lille lead the division, are unbeaten and have conceded only two goals.

The tactical problem for Nice is obvious. If they remain too conservative, they may isolate Elye Wahi and create very little. If they advance in greater numbers, Lille have enough movement and technical quality to attack the spaces left behind.

Lille should be comfortable controlling the ball and using Olivier Giroud as a central reference point. Giroud’s ability to connect play can bring runners into advanced areas, while Tiago Santos provides additional threat from deeper or wider positions.

Nice’s best opportunity may come from set pieces or a transition following a Lille turnover. They are unlikely to dominate possession for long periods, so Wahi must make the most of limited service.

Benjamin André and Matias Fernandez-Pardo appeared on Lille’s earlier suspension list. Their status requires confirmation after the latest disciplinary updates.

Lille at 2.05 are the weekend’s most convincing form-based selection, although away favourites are rarely as comfortable in practice as they appear in spreadsheets. Nice’s lack of goals makes a narrow Lille victory more plausible than a rout.

Best analytical angle: Lille to win a low-scoring match. Correct-score lean: 0-1.

Marseille vs Paris Saint-Germain

🟡 Value
Kick-off: 19:45 BST / 20:45 CEST Venue: Stade Vélodrome
Embed from Getty Images
Le Classique returns with both clubs searching for their expected rhythm.
Marseille 5.25 Draw 4.50 PSG 1.53

Prediction: Marseille 1-2 PSG

Le Classique arrives with both clubs in unusually awkward positions.

Marseille have lost three of four league matches despite scoring six goals. PSG have five points and only recently recorded their first victory, beating Brest 1-0. Neither side has looked entirely convincing, but the market still places PSG as heavy favourites.

Marseille’s attacking plan revolves heavily around Gouiri, who has scored four of their six goals. He is dangerous when receiving between the lines, combining with runners or attacking the penalty area after an initial progression.

PSG must therefore prevent Marseille from finding him cleanly. Their midfield, likely to feature players such as Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz, should focus on controlling central possession while drawing Marseille’s press forward.

The strategic dilemma for the hosts is substantial. Sitting deep at the Vélodrome may invite sustained PSG pressure and irritate the crowd. Pressing aggressively may create the space PSG need to attack behind Marseille’s full-backs.

Ferran Torres enters the fixture with three league goals and should be a significant threat if Marseille’s defensive line becomes fragmented.

Marseille’s availability list included Igor Paixão, Geoffrey Kondogbia and T. Nnadi with injury concerns, while Quinten Timber appeared among the suspensions. Nuno Mendes appeared on PSG’s suspension list. Final press-conference information will be particularly important here.

PSG’s price of 1.53 reflects the difference in squad strength more than the difference in current performance. Marseille’s home environment and Gouiri’s form make them capable of scoring, but PSG should have the greater number of routes to victory.

Best analytical angle: PSG to win without necessarily keeping a clean sheet. Correct-score lean: 1-2.

Weekend Betting Picture

The nine fixtures contain several distinct market profiles.

Nine fixtures, several distinct market profiles — treat each on its own merits.

Strongest match-result positions

Lille at Nice is the clearest form-based away selection. Lille’s defensive record is strong, while Nice have scored once in four matches.

PSG at Marseille is the shortest-priced favourite, although the derby environment and PSG’s modest opening form make the 1.53 price less straightforward than it initially appears.

Toulouse at home to Le Havre is a plausible home-win position, but the stronger analytical case may be for a low total rather than a confident Toulouse victory.

Matches suited to goal markets

Le Mans vs Lorient is the strongest high-scoring candidate. Le Mans have scored seven and conceded eight, while Lorient enter after a 2-2 draw.

Paris FC vs Strasbourg also carries strong both-teams-to-score potential. Strasbourg lead the league in goals but have conceded eight, while Paris FC possess one of the division’s most effective early scorers in Sinayoko.

Monaco vs Lens may follow a similar pattern. Monaco deserve favouritism, but Lens retain enough attacking ability through Thauvin and their supporting runners to threaten.

Potential low-scoring fixtures

Toulouse vs Le Havre has the clearest low-total profile. Le Havre have scored twice in four matches and are likely to adopt a cautious away approach.

Nice vs Lille may also remain below 2.5 goals. Lille have conceded only twice, and Nice’s attacking output has been minimal.

Draw candidates

Lyon vs Rennes is the most attractive draw profile because both sides are unbeaten and possess strong early defensive numbers.

Angers vs Troyes also looks finely balanced, although the lower level of consistency makes its outcome more difficult to predict.

Players to Watch Across Matchweek 5

Amine Gouiri

Four goals in four matches make Gouiri the focal point of Marseille’s attack. PSG will try to deny him central receptions, but his individual form gives the hosts a credible route into Le Classique.

Kamory Doumbia

Doumbia’s four goals and one assist represent the most complete attacking contribution in the league. Auxerre’s vulnerable defensive structure offers him another favourable opportunity.

Lassine Sinayoko

Sinayoko’s transition threat is perfectly suited to facing Strasbourg. If the visitors commit too heavily to attacks, he could find the open field he prefers.

Paris Brunner

The Monaco forward has scored three times and will face a Lens defence that has not looked completely secure. His movement inside the box should be central to Monaco’s attack.

Esteban Lepaul

Lepaul has become the clearest finishing threat in an unbeaten Rennes side. Lyon will need to control his runs between full-back and centre-back.

Louis Mafouta

With three goals for Le Mans, Mafouta enters one of the most favourable attacking fixtures of the weekend. The question is not whether Le Mans can create, but whether their defensive structure can prevent the contest becoming chaotic.

Ferran Torres

Torres has scored three times for PSG and could benefit from the spaces created if Marseille press aggressively. He is a particularly interesting player to monitor once the starting lineups are confirmed.

↑ Back to Contents

Fantasy Football Outlook

Where a Ligue 1 fantasy format is available, Doumbia offers the strongest blend of form and fixture. Auxerre’s defensive record makes the Brest midfielder an obvious captaincy candidate.

Sinayoko is another strong option because of his four-goal start and Strasbourg’s defensive openness. Brunner has home advantage against Lens, while Ferran Torres offers premium upside in Le Classique.

Potential differential selections include Mafouta, Lepaul, Tiago Santos and Katseris. Nice attackers and Auxerre defenders are more difficult to recommend on current evidence.

Managers should avoid making final transfers until the latest injury and suspension updates are published. Several important players appeared on an availability list compiled before Matchweek 4, and their statuses may have changed.

Final Verdict

Lille begin Matchweek 5 with the strongest combination of form, defensive control and fixture suitability. Their visit to Nice offers an opportunity to reinforce their position at the top, especially against a side that has scored only once.

Lyon against Rennes is the weekend’s tactical centrepiece. It should reveal whether Rennes’ excellent start can withstand a controlled away examination and whether Lyon can convert possession into sufficient penetration against one of the league’s most effective early teams.

Paris FC face a different kind of test. Their disciplined structure has been impressive, but Strasbourg’s nine-goal attack will test their defensive organisation more severely than most previous opponents.

Le Mans against Lorient should provide the greatest attacking entertainment, while Toulouse against Le Havre appears more likely to become a patient, low-scoring contest. Marseille against PSG is the least predictable fixture emotionally, even if the market considers it one of the most predictable mathematically.

The sensible approach is to treat current results as evidence rather than proof. Four matches tell us that Lille are balanced, Rennes are potent, Paris FC are credible, Strasbourg are entertaining and Nice cannot find the net. They do not yet tell us whether all of those things will still be true in November.

For now, the strongest score predictions are Nice 0-1 Lille, Toulouse 1-0 Le Havre and Marseille 1-2 PSG. The most convincing goals fixture is Le Mans versus Lorient, while Lyon versus Rennes carries the strongest draw profile.

And if every match finishes 0-0, we shall simply describe it as an important weekend for defensive organisation.
