Hell Is Real, The Squad Isn't: Columbus Crew vs FC Cincinnati, And The Price That Doesn't Add Up

The Betting Edge — MLS Matchday 18 · Saturday 25 July, 23:15 UTC (00:15 BST, Sun 26th) · ScottsMiracle-Gro Field

>

Two teams walked back from the World Cup break on Wednesday night and told you almost everything you need to know. FC Cincinnati won a 4-3 shootout with Vancouver in which they scored four times and still looked like a side you could burgle. Columbus Crew lost 2-1 at home to New York City FC and scored their only goal from the penalty spot in the 93rd minute, by which point the result had already been filed.

The market has looked at those two performances, checked the table, and made the eleventh-placed side the favourite. That's the trade. Whether it's a good one is what the next 1,300 words are about.

The Table Doesn't Flatter Either of Them

Cincinnati sit fifth with a goal difference of precisely nothing — 40 scored, 40 conceded, the second-leakiest defence in MLS behind Orlando. They are the league's most watchable accident. Columbus are 25th of 30 in the Supporters' Shield table, three points off the ninth and final playoff berth held by D.C. United, and the season has already cost one manager his job.

Team News: One Squad Is Whole, One Is A Waiting Room

Columbus is the more interesting mess. Henrik Rydström was relieved of his duties in mid-May after a 3-7-4 start, with GM Issa Tall citing a disconnect between coach and players. Academy-and-Crew-2 alumnus Laurent Courtois stepped up as interim and won his first two games; Wednesday was his first defeat.

The bigger problem is the personnel. Leading scorer Diego Rossi was sold to CF Monterrey on 3 July for a fee reported up to $8m. Wessam Abou Ali — five goals in seven games before 12 April — is on the season-ending injury list with a torn ACL. That's 11 of the club's 22 league goals removed from the building.

The replacements are real but not yet usable. Brais Méndez, signed from Real Sociedad as a Designated Player, only had his visa finalised on 21 July and hasn't trained with the group. Lautaro Giaccone, Eric Bailly and Andrés Herrera are all in the same paperwork queue. Brooks Lennon is out with a groin problem; André Gomes was listed questionable with a thigh issue.

So Courtois goes into a derby with a front line of Nariman Akhundzada and Jamal Thiaré, and a bench that's mostly hope.

Cincinnati arrive with a clean bill of health. Pat Noonan's only genuine call is at the back, where Miles Robinson was withdrawn just past the hour against Vancouver after a rough night, with Kyle Smith the obvious swap. Pavel Bucha (two goals), Evander (goal and assist, and an All-Star selection) and Kévin Denkey (10 for the season) all pick themselves.

Probable XIs

Columbus Crew (4-4-2): Schulte; Farsi, Zawadzki, Camacho, Amundsen; Arfsten, Karumanchi, Bangoura, Habroune; Akhundzada, Thiaré. Options: Gazdag, Chambost, Sejdić, Moreira.

FC Cincinnati (3-4-2-1): Celentano; Gidi, Miazga, Robinson; Echenique, Nwobodo, Bucha, Valenzuela; Evander, Mboma Dem; Denkey. Options: Smith, Hadebe, Barlow, Jabbari, Ramírez.

The tactical read: Cincinnati's back three plus wing-backs is built to funnel play wide and then win the second ball through Nwobodo. It works when the midfield screen holds and disintegrates when it doesn't — hence 40 conceded. Their damage comes through Evander drifting inside off the left and Denkey attacking the far post.

Columbus, without Rossi's runs in behind, have become a possession side without a finisher. Max Arfsten (four goals, four assists) and Taha Habroune (eight big chances created in barely 1,000 minutes) are the creators. The problem is who's on the end of it.

The Numbers That Actually Matter

Head-to-head, last three meetings — all from the 2025 playoff series, and all decided by fine margins:

  • 27 Oct 2025: Cincinnati 1-0 Columbus
  • 2 Nov 2025: Columbus 4-0 Cincinnati
  • 8 Nov 2025: Cincinnati 2-1 Columbus (Cincinnati took the series)

All-time it's Columbus 9, drawn 6, Cincinnati 6 across 21 meetings.

Per-90 splits, 2026 league season:

GF/90GA/90
Columbus (overall)1.381.56
Columbus at home1.251.00
Cincinnati (overall)2.502.50
Cincinnati away2.002.88

Here's the number nobody is quoting. Cincinnati have won one of eight away league matches this season — 1W-3L-4D, seven points from 24, with a 50% draw rate on the road. And Columbus, for all the chaos, have conceded eight goals in eight home matches with three clean sheets.

The other number worth having: Columbus home games have gone over 2.5 goals just three times in eight. Total goals in their eight home fixtures: 0, 1, 2, 3, 2, 5, 2, 3.

The Market, And Where It's Wrong

Publicly available prices are thin for this fixture. What follows is the bet365 board as carried by one aggregator on 23 July, converted from American to decimal. Everything else is a target price, not a quote.

Model: independent Poisson, Columbus 1.55 expected goals, Cincinnati 1.45, adjusted for Columbus's attacking losses and Cincinnati's away profile. Fair 1X2 lines come out at Columbus 2.50, draw 4.12, Cincinnati 2.80.

That leaves five priced markets and five negative-expectation bets. Which is a finding, not a failure. Over 2.5 will probably land — 58% is still odds-on. But 1.36 pays you like it's a 73.5% shot, and the gap between "likely" and "profitable" is the entire business.

Recommended Positions

1. FC Cincinnati double chance (draw or Cincinnati win) — take at 1.75 or better

Model probability 60.0%, fair price 1.67. If Columbus really are 1.69, the away double chance should be findable in the 1.60s and occasionally above. Cincinnati have drawn half their road games; Columbus have four wins all season. Edge at 1.75: +5.0%.

Confidence: Moderate
2. Under 3.5 goals — take at 1.62 or better

Model probability 64.7%, fair price 1.55. This is the contrarian side of the goals market, supported by the venue: Columbus home matches average 2.25 total goals, not four. Edge at 1.62: +4.8%.

Confidence: Moderate
3. Correct score 1-1 — take at 9.00 or better

The single most likely scoreline in the model at 11.2%, fair 8.94. Small stake, correct-score variance applies.

Confidence: Low–Moderate
Asian handicap note: Cincinnati +0.5 is the double chance by another name. Cincinnati on the draw-no-bet line (0.0) needs 2.12 to be fair.

Prediction

Columbus Crew 1-1 FC Cincinnati.

Cincinnati are the better team and will be for the rest of the season. But they are also a team that goes to strange places on the road, draws four games out of eight, and has a defence that concedes to anybody. Columbus are a home side with a functioning back four, a decent goalkeeper, and an attack that currently consists of two forwards and a prayer.

That's a game that ends level far more often than a 1.69 favourite price suggests. The card is built around Cincinnati not losing, not around Cincinnati winning — those are different bets and only one of them is priced sensibly.

For Columbus, a point keeps the playoff maths breathing until Méndez, Giaccone and Bailly are actually available; a defeat and the gap to ninth becomes the sort of thing you stop mentioning. For Cincinnati, three points would be their second away win of the campaign in nineteen weeks, which tells you how little the road has given them so far — and why the market's confidence in the home side is the only genuinely surprising thing about this fixture.

Price integrity note: Decimal odds shown were sourced from a single third-party aggregator quoting bet365 on 23 July 2026 and converted from American format. No 1X2 prices for the draw or Cincinnati, and no double chance, handicap or correct-score prices, were publicly published at the time of writing — the target prices above are thresholds, not quotes.
