UEFA Champions League Play-Off Preview: 18–19 August 2026

The Betting Edge

The Champions League play-offs arrive this week with seven remaining league-phase places still up for grabs, which means we have reached that delightful late-August point where clubs are simultaneously chasing prestige, revenue, and the right to hear the anthem without pretending it does not matter. Across 18 and 19 August 2026, the first legs give us seven ties split between the Champions Path and the League Path, with winners advancing to the new-look league phase and the defeated sides dropping into the Europa League league phase. Nobody is truly eliminated yet, but try telling that to a manager who has just watched his centre-back misjudge a bouncing ball in the 89th minute.

Because the league phase has not started, there is no 2026/27 Champions League table to interrogate — and honestly, that is fine. What the qualifying rounds have already handed us is more useful for betting purposes anyway: aggregate scorelines, attacking output, defensive profiles, momentum, and live market prices. The early hierarchy has formed without anyone needing to publish a standings graphic.

Dinamo Zagreb have looked the strongest of the Champions Path sides after flattening Kauno Žalgiris 7-1 on aggregate. Fenerbahçe have looked the most controlled of the League Path teams after beating Sturm Graz 3-0 without conceding. Bodø/Glimt, meanwhile, have already reminded everyone that they treat defending as a loose suggestion, winning a 6-5 aggregate epic against Union SG.

Seven places in the league phase, fourteen clubs, and one week to make a mess of it.

The State of Play: What the Qualifying Rounds Have Told Us

Qualifying began on 7 July and now concludes with play-off legs across 18/19 and 25/26 August. UEFA splits this round into the Champions Path, featuring domestic title winners from lower-ranked associations, and the League Path, featuring non-champions from stronger domestic leagues. The prize is unambiguous: seven places in the league phase, joining the 29 clubs already qualified directly.

The current form hierarchy is not subtle. GNK Dinamo Zagreb produced the most emphatic recent qualifying performance, beating Kauno Žalgiris 5-0 at home and 2-1 away for a 7-1 aggregate win. That is the sort of result that does not merely suggest superiority, it arrives wearing a high-vis jacket and holding a clipboard. Fenerbahçe were much tighter, beating Sturm Graz 2-0 at home and 1-0 away, which gives them perhaps the cleanest two-legged profile among the stronger-market sides. Hapoel Beer-Sheva also deserve attention after beating Crvena Zvezda 3-0 on aggregate, an excellent defensive statement given the opponent’s European pedigree.

At the more volatile end, Bodø/Glimt beat Union SG 6-5 after extra time, a tie that tells us almost everything we need to know about their betting profile. They can score, they can concede, they can terrify under bettors, and they are rarely dull. N.E.C. Nijmegen also came through after extra time, beating Olympiacos 2-1 on aggregate, which shows resilience but also raises the issue of fatigue. Sabah are one of the more intriguing outsiders after beating Aarhus 5-2 on aggregate, including a thumping 4-0 second-leg win.

Defensively, the standouts are Fenerbahçe, Hapoel Beer-Sheva and Levski Sofia, all of whom advanced from their most recent ties without conceding. Levski’s profile is especially low-margin: they beat Kairat Almaty 2-0 on aggregate via two 1-0 wins. Excellent for structure, less excellent if you were hoping for a goal festival.

Aggregate scorelines have already built the hierarchy the table cannot.

The Individual Form Guide: Scorers, Creators and Penalty Men

The qualifying top-scorer race gives us useful betting clues. Veljko Simić of Sabah leads the Champions League qualifying scoring charts with five goals in six matches, making him the most obvious anytime-scorer candidate among underdog attackers. Sabah are not here for the scenery. They carry genuine threat, especially through Simić and Joy-Lance Mickels, who has three qualifying goals.

Behind Simić, Mario Kvesić of Celje and Talisca of Fenerbahçe both sit on four. Kvesić has become Celje’s central attacking figure, while Talisca’s profile is even more betting-friendly because worldfootball.net lists him with two penalties among those four goals. That makes him particularly relevant in anytime scorer and penalty-taker markets, provided he starts.

The creative numbers matter too. ESPN’s qualifying statistics list Tymoteusz Puchacz of Sabah, Serginho and Everton Bala of Levski Sofia, and Sandro Cruz of Slovan Bratislava among the assist leaders with three each. These are not decorative names to drop into a preview. They help identify the teams whose goal threat is repeatable rather than built on one fortunate deflection and a goalkeeper having a deeply personal crisis.

Line-up caveat: Confirmed team sheets were not available at the time of writing for several of these ties. August European football is volatile for selection — rotation, late registrations and players held back for domestic openers all apply. Treat every goalscorer, assist and card market as provisional until the sheets land roughly an hour before kick-off.

Levski Sofia vs AEK Athens

20:00 UK  ·  Vasil Levski National Stadium  ·  Champions Path, first leg

Levski enter this tie with one of the clearest tactical identities of the round. They are not coming in with fireworks, brass bands and a reckless high line. They are coming in with control, clean sheets and the sort of narrow victories that make a betting slip feel both safe and slightly bored. Their 2-0 aggregate win over Kairat Almaty came through two separate 1-0 victories, which tells us plenty about the kind of match they will want against AEK.

AEK enter at the play-off stage, meaning they do not have the same current qualifying sample as Levski. That creates a modelling gap. AEK’s club profile and squad level should command respect, but Levski have match rhythm, defensive confidence and home advantage. In a first leg, that can matter. Nobody wins a tie in the first twenty minutes, but plenty of teams have spent the following week regretting what happened there.

Levski’s route is likely to be compact and disciplined: protect central areas, force AEK wide, and manufacture the best chances through transitions or set pieces. Reinaldo, with three qualifying goals, is the obvious attacking reference point, while Serginho and Everton Bala both appear among the qualifying assist leaders.

SelectionOddscheckerLadbrokes
Levski Sofia2.922.88
Draw3.303.30
AEK Athens2.502.40

Price check: the best angle here is not a side, it is the game state. Levski’s recent profile points hard at under 2.5 goals, especially if the market offers 1.75 or better. The draw at 3.30 also has appeal. A 1-1 feels like the most natural scoreline — AEK with enough quality to score, Levski with enough structure to avoid collapse, and the tie still delicately balanced come the return.

Verdict

  • Recommended bet: Under 2.5 goals
  • Value lean: Draw
  • Correct-score angle: 1-1

Levski have built their run on 1-0 wins. Not thrilling, but hard to argue with.

GNK Dinamo Zagreb vs Viking

20:00 UK  ·  Stadion Maksimir  ·  Champions Path, first leg

Dinamo look like one of the safest favourites on the card, which is always a dangerous sentence to type because football enjoys humiliating certainty. Still, the evidence is strong. Dinamo beat Kauno Žalgiris 7-1 on aggregate in the previous round, including a 5-0 home win that effectively ended the tie before the second leg had a chance to exist.

At Maksimir, Dinamo should control territory, possession and chance volume. Viking, entering at this stage, will need to survive spells of sustained pressure and avoid handing Dinamo early set-piece momentum. Dinamo’s midfield has enough control and vertical passing to pin visitors back, while Lukas Kačavenda, with three qualifying goals, gives them a clear between-the-lines scoring threat.

Match odds (decimal)
SelectionOddscheckerLadbrokes
Dinamo Zagreb1.751.75
DrawAround 4.00 at both books
Viking4.20 – 4.35 across the two books

Price check: Dinamo to win is one of the cleanest positions of the week. The handicap is also interesting — if the Asian line offers Dinamo -0.75 at around 1.85, that becomes a strong alternative for anyone willing to accept a little more risk. Dinamo over 1.5 team goals also makes sense given their home output in the previous round.

Verdict

  • Recommended bet: Dinamo Zagreb win
  • Alternative: Dinamo -0.75 Asian handicap
  • Correct-score angle: 2-0

Fenerbahçe vs Lyon

20:00 UK  ·  Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium  ·  League Path, first leg

This is the heavyweight tie of the round. Fenerbahçe against Lyon has the feel of a proper Champions League play-off, the kind where both clubs can reasonably believe they belong in the league phase and also know that one loose pass could turn the week into a long HR meeting.

Fenerbahçe progressed with authority against Sturm Graz, winning 3-0 on aggregate and keeping clean sheets across both legs. That is a major early pattern: control and efficiency in the same package. Lyon had a wobblier path, losing 2-1 away to Sparta Praha before responding with a 3-0 home win to go through 4-2.

The tactical shape here is delicious. Fenerbahçe will want to use the atmosphere, start fast and push Lyon into uncomfortable defensive moments. Lyon need to avoid making the first half an emotional event — easier written than done in Istanbul, where the crowd tends to treat every throw-in like a referendum.

Talisca is the standout individual angle. Four qualifying goals in four appearances, two of them listed penalties, which gives him both open-play and set-piece value. If he starts, he is the first name to check in the anytime-scorer market.

Match odds (decimal)
SelectionOddscheckerLadbrokes
Fenerbahçe2.102.05
Draw3.70Not listed at time of writing
Lyon3.503.20

Price check: the better position is probably Fenerbahçe draw no bet rather than the straight home win. Lyon have enough quality to punish a loose game, but Fenerbahçe’s home advantage, defensive form and Talisca’s output tilt the tie towards the Turkish side. Both teams to score is also playable at 1.75 or better.

Verdict

  • Recommended bet: Fenerbahçe draw no bet
  • Scorer angle: Talisca anytime scorer, if starting
  • Correct-score angle: 2-1 Fenerbahçe

Istanbul on a European night: not a neutral venue in any meaningful sense.

Wednesday 19 August

Celtic vs LASK

20:00 UK  ·  Celtic Park  ·  Champions Path, first leg

Celtic Park in a Champions League play-off is not a neutral sporting environment. It is a pressure chamber with seats. Celtic host LASK in a Champions Path first leg, and the market makes the Scottish champions one of the clearest favourites on the card. UEFA’s match page confirms the fixture, although live team information was not yet available at the time of checking.

That matters. Without confirmed line-ups, the betting approach should avoid very specific player props until team sheets land. From a match-result perspective, though, Celtic’s price is understandably short.

Tactically, Celtic should press high, use their wide players aggressively and force LASK into hurried build-up. LASK’s route involves surviving the opening phase, slowing the game down and finding transition moments behind Celtic’s full-backs. The problem is that Celtic at home rarely allow opponents the luxury of settling in. They prefer to make the opening quarter feel like a fire drill.

Match odds (decimal)
SelectionOddscheckerLadbrokes
Celtic1.651.62
Draw4.004.00
LASK5.605.00

Price check: Celtic to win is a strong accumulator piece. Celtic over 1.5 team goals is also viable if the price has not been compressed too far. The correct-score angle is 2-0, especially if LASK arrive with a containment-first approach.

Verdict

  • Recommended bet: Celtic win
  • Alternative: Celtic over 1.5 team goals
  • Correct-score angle: 2-0

LASK need the opening twenty minutes to be boring. Celtic have other plans.

Hapoel Beer-Sheva vs Sabah

20:00 UK  ·  Turner Stadium  ·  Champions Path, first leg

One of the more fascinating ties of the round, because it delivers a clean tactical contrast: Hapoel’s defensive control against Sabah’s attacking momentum. Hapoel’s 3-0 aggregate win over Crvena Zvezda was arguably the most impressive defensive statement of the previous round. Sabah, on the other hand, beat Aarhus 5-2 on aggregate and smashed them 4-0 in the second leg.

Sabah’s forward threat is not speculative. Veljko Simić leads the qualifying scoring charts with five, Joy-Lance Mickels has three, and Tymoteusz Puchacz sits among the assist leaders with three. That gives Sabah a repeatable creative route rather than a hot finishing streak wearing a disguise.

Match odds (decimal)
SelectionOddscheckerLadbrokes
Hapoel Beer-Sheva2.382.25
Draw3.403.40
Sabah3.103.10

Price check: the question is whether Hapoel’s defensive numbers can contain Sabah’s in-form attack. They might, but the price on the home win does not feel generous given Sabah’s scoring form. The better route is both teams to score, especially at 1.80 or better. Sabah +0.5 on the Asian handicap also appeals, because a draw would be an excellent first-leg result for them and a very plausible outcome.

Verdict

  • Recommended bet: Both teams to score
  • Value lean: Sabah +0.5 Asian handicap
  • Correct-score angle: 1-1

N.E.C. Nijmegen vs Bodø/Glimt

20:00 UK  ·  Goffertstadion  ·  League Path, first leg

If you are looking for the most obvious goals game of the round, here it is. N.E.C. edged Olympiacos 2-1 on aggregate after extra time, while Bodø/Glimt beat Union SG 6-5, also after extra time.

That previous Bodø/Glimt tie was not merely open. It was a full theatrical production. They have attacking structure, speed, confidence and a tendency to leave defensive gaps that make under bettors stare into the middle distance. Ole Didrik Blomberg has two qualifying goals and Patrick Berg is also among the listed scorers, giving them multiple routes to goal.

N.E.C. are not without appeal. Beating Olympiacos over two legs shows durability and tactical discipline. But they needed extra time to do it, as did Bodø/Glimt, so physical freshness could become a major factor late on. That arguably strengthens the goals angle, because tired legs rarely produce better defensive spacing.

Match odds (decimal)
SelectionOddscheckerLadbrokes
N.E.C. Nijmegen2.552.30
Draw4.003.80
Bodø/Glimt2.502.75

Price check: the 1X2 market is tricky because both sides have a case, and the two books disagree about which. The totals market is much cleaner. Over 2.5 goals is the standout selection at 1.75 or better, with both teams to score also strong at 1.65 or better.

Verdict

  • Recommended bet: Over 2.5 goals
  • Secondary: Both teams to score
  • Correct-score angle: 2-2

Eleven goals in one tie. Bodø/Glimt do not really do quiet evenings.

Slovan Bratislava vs Celje

20:00 UK  ·  Tehelné pole  ·  Champions Path, first leg

Slovan look like a strong, sensible home favourite. They beat Mjällby 4-1 on aggregate, winning 2-1 away and 2-0 at home, which demonstrates both away resilience and home control. Celje progressed more dramatically, losing 2-1 away to Ararat-Armenia before winning 2-0 at home to advance 3-2.

The match-up to watch is Slovan’s creative supply against Celje’s main finisher. Sandro Cruz has three qualifying assists, while Alasana Yirajang and Suleiman Camara both have two qualifying goals. Celje’s key man is Mario Kvesić, with four goals in qualifying and a place among the competition’s leading scorers.

Match odds (decimal)
SelectionOddscheckerLadbrokes
Slovan Bratislava1.751.73
Draw3.903.80
Celje4.604.50

Price check: Slovan to win is the obvious play. The concern is that Celje have enough punch through Kvesić to make this uncomfortable, so a 2-1 home win feels more realistic than a clean, clinical 2-0. If Slovan’s price drifts closer to 1.80, it becomes more attractive.

Verdict

  • Recommended bet: Slovan Bratislava win
  • Alternative: Slovan double chance in accumulators
  • Correct-score angle: 2-1

Best Bets Across the Card

The strongest straight favourites are Celtic, Dinamo Zagreb and Slovan Bratislava, although Slovan carry slightly more risk because Celje have a genuine scorer in Mario Kvesić. Celtic and Dinamo are the most obvious accumulator anchors, while Fenerbahçe are better approached via draw no bet because Lyon are too dangerous to dismiss outright.

The goals markets are led by N.E.C. vs Bodø/Glimt over 2.5, the cleanest statistical fit of the week. That 6-5 aggregate against Union SG gives the market a fairly loud hint. Hapoel Beer-Sheva vs Sabah also looks good for both teams to score — not because Hapoel concede easily, but because Sabah’s attacking form is strong enough to test a defence in good rhythm.

Conservative card

  • Dinamo Zagreb to win, around 1.75
  • Celtic to win, around 1.62–1.65
  • Slovan Bratislava double chance
  • N.E.C. vs Bodø/Glimt over 1.5 goals

Higher-value card

  • Fenerbahçe draw no bet
  • N.E.C. vs Bodø/Glimt over 2.5 goals
  • Sabah +0.5 Asian handicap
  • Levski Sofia vs AEK Athens draw

Anytime scorer shortlist

  • Talisca, Fenerbahçe — if starting
  • Veljko Simić, Sabah — if starting
  • Mario Kvesić, Celje — if priced generously
  • Lukas Kačavenda, Dinamo Zagreb — if starting
Settlement note: These are first legs, so 90-minute settlement applies as normal. Extra time and penalties only enter the picture in the second legs on 25 and 26 August, where a tie level on aggregate after 90 minutes goes to an additional 30 minutes and, if required, spot kicks. Check whether your market settles on 90 minutes or on tie progression — particularly for "to qualify" and correct-score bets, where the difference is not academic.

Seven ties, two evenings, and a league-phase draw waiting on 27 August.

A word on the prices

Every decimal price quoted in this preview is a snapshot taken from Oddschecker and Ladbrokes ahead of the first legs, and prices move — sometimes sharply, once team news lands. Where a book had not posted a selection at the time of writing, that is stated rather than filled in. Nothing here is invented to make a table look tidy. Confirm the live price with your own bookmaker before any stake goes down, and if a quoted number has vanished, the bet has changed, not just the odds.

Final Predictions

Levski Sofia vs AEK Athens feels like a cautious first leg, with Levski’s defensive form pointing toward a low-scoring result. Dinamo Zagreb should have too much for Viking at home. Fenerbahçe vs Lyon is the best traditional big-club tie, with the Turkish side narrowly preferred on home advantage and Talisca’s form. Celtic should beat LASK at Celtic Park if they perform to market expectation. Hapoel Beer-Sheva vs Sabah is the best underdog-value match, while N.E.C. vs Bodø/Glimt is the one most likely to end up a goal-heavy mess. Slovan Bratislava should beat Celje, though probably not without a scare.

Final Word

If you want the sensible card, keep it simple: Celtic win, Dinamo win, Slovan double chance, and the N.E.C. vs Bodø/Glimt goals angle. If you want value, look at Sabah +0.5, Fenerbahçe draw no bet, and the Levski vs AEK draw. And if you are determined to put all seven matches into one accumulator, please at least make yourself a cup of tea first and think carefully about the life choices that brought you here.
